Building Systems Need to Be Functional, Economical and Convenient

When you build a pole barn home or any other living space, you can use many building systems that have been in use over the years and others that have been developed as part of building technology.

Early man used caves as homes and later found it easy to use mud, thatch and other naturally occurring materials to make himself a home that gave the necessary protection from the elements and other predators. More permanent structures were built using stone and once the discovery was made of bonding materials like lime and cements. Bricks were developed for use instead of stones, and even today make up for a majority of the homes built throughout the world. The use of concrete using cement and the realization that steel could be used to reinforce it, led to the development of building systems that used concrete. Steel also made its entry into the list of materials that were able to create building systems and is very much in vogue today for taller structures, and other structures that call for high strength. Pole barn homes have also been extensively built with wood, as this was a natural material that was easily available.

Building systems can be classified depending on the elements that support and enclose the desired space. Arches, trusses, and frames support roofs while walls are made from panels of various materials that help to enclose the area. Roofing materials complete the structure. When you refer to building systems, you can also include in it all mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other systems that are essential parts of a building that make it more utilitarian.

Reinforced concrete structures are the most commonly used of building systems for typical buildings. Steel framing is used where it is needed to span large areas or where a building may have heavy loads, static or moving, imposed on it. Masonry structures using brick, stones or precast concrete blocks is used mainly for forming walls and partitions. Use is also made of wood, gypsum plaster and other materials for these purposes, mainly in the interiors of living spaces.

It is essential that any building system used must be able to create the required structure at the lowest cost, within the earliest time and give the needed convenience and comfort. The systems used, need to be low maintenance and must have the durability to last for many years, as costs for putting up structures can be quite high.
